Think you might be interested in working with drones?
The FAA has guidelines for commercial use of drones and requires a certificate of operation:
“A person operating a small UAS must either hold a remote pilot airman certificate with a small UAS rating or be under the direct supervision of a person who does hold a remote pilot certificate (remote pilot in command).”
For those who don’t receive their training through the military, like Walker Clayton in my book “Sky Witness Rescue,” there are several U.S. colleges offering drone training:
- Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Daytona Beach, Florida
- Green River College in Auburn, Washington
- Indiana State University in Terre Haute, Indiana
- Kansas State University in Manhattan, Kansas
- Kent State University in Kent, Ohio
- LeTourneau University in Longview, Texas
- Lewis University in Romeoville, Illinois
- Liberty University in Lynchburg, Virginia
- Middle Tennessee State University in Murfreesboro, Tennessee
- Mohawk Valley Community College in Utica, New York
- Monroe Community College in Rochester, New York
- Northwestern Michigan College in Traverse City, Michigan
- Oklahoma State University in Stillwater, Oklahoma
- Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana
- South Dakota State University in Brookings, South Dakota
- Spartan College of Aeronautics and Technology in Broomfield, Colorado
- Troy University in Troy, Alabama
- University of Louisiana in Monroe, Louisiana
- University of Memphis in Memphis, Tennessee
- University of Nevada in Reno, Nevada
- University of North Dakota in Grand Forks, North Dakota
Besides the military and aerospace, here are a few fields where drones are soaring:
• Law enforcement
• Firefighting
• Search and rescue
• Disaster relief
• Oil and gas operations
• Seismic studies
• Traffic reporting
• Agriculture
• Storm chasing
• Engineering
• Package delivery
• Photography
• Commercial contractor
With drones used in so many places, the possibilities for suspenseful stories are endless. I hope you’ll stay with me as I pen more novels about characters whose work takes them to exciting and sometimes dangerous situations.
